Around the World in 80 Dishes: Currywurst

We arrived in Berlin eager for days filled with beer gardens and sausages. After walking the streets we quickly found that Berlin is a melting pot of culinary traditions from all over the world. Some of the best Italian food we had on our entire trip was not, in fact, in Italy. It was in Berlin. When it comes to street food, however, currywurst is by far the most famous dish on Berlin’s streets. Having never heard of the dish we had to try this local street food.

In its simplest form currywurst is just a bratwurst with ketchup and curry powder sprinkled on top. This is a quick, cheap, and iconic dish of Berlin. We however found it a little bland. So, to make our version a bit more exciting we decided to spice it up a little.

Currywurst

Ingredients

2-4 bratwurst

1/2 cup ketchup

1/2 tsp paprika

1/2 tsp onion powder

2 tbls water

Start cooking your brats on the grill or stove top. We suggest using low-med heat on the stove top. This allows you to cook the sausage through without burning the outer casing to excessive char.

While your brats are cooking pour your ketchup in a small pot on Low heat. Add your spices and the water to the ketchup and stir together.

Let the ketchup mixture heat up on low with some stirring for about 3 minutes. Then remove the pot from the heat.

Your brats should take 15-20 minutes to cook. Be sure to check that they are thoroughly cooked by slicing one through the middle. There should be absolutely no pink inside.

Once your brats are done, slice them and top with your ketchup. Then sprinkle some extra curry powder on top to serve.
